    When Mary was five, her parents relocated to Sandy, Utah, near Salt Lake City. She was admitted to advanced classes at the Peruvian Park Elementary School.

    She joined the Joffrey Ballet summer program school in Chicago, Illinois so that she could enhance her dancing skills. Her ability to sing got her to perform in the 'International Children's Choir' at the age of 12.

    Then she did an adaptation of the comic-book Scott Pilgrim, as Scott's love interest opposite Michael Cera in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, directed by Edgar Wright. Though the movie received good critical reviews, the audiences couldn't care less about the movie. However, her efforts didn't go unnoticed as she received Teen Choice Awards for her role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

    She then did the role of Dr. Kate Lloyd, a paleontologist who with her team finds a frozen Alien in Antarctica which later comes alive and starts hunting the team down. This movie, despite having a lot of expectations, failed to live up to its hype and received negative reviews from critics. 

    So, after the series of much minor success, she turned her back to horror, action, and Sify and turned towards more indi-projects.

    She did a totally unexpected role in an independent movie Smashed, which was based on an alcoholic couple's dysfunctional marriage.

    Winstead then played Mary Todd Lincoln opposite Benjamin Walker in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The movie showed Lincoln as a vampire hunting superhero which again was a huge disappointment in the OfficeMax but her role however was praised.
