    Kao was born and raised in California's Hacienda Heights, to father Gary Kao who was a mailman and is a Glen A. Wilson High School graduate. 

    Kao's parents wanted him to become a Doctor but in his High-School Lawrence played Lysander A Midsummer Night's Dream in his high-school production. 

    Surprisingly, his acting was so realistic that he was wrongly arrested for attempt to murder and assault with a deadly weapon during one of the show's in-class previews. 

    He would have been sentence for 40 years if the whole thing was real but he was released for the show's closing night. So, the whole incident filled Kao with confidence to take on acting career!

    Following that, he also formed a dancing crew Kaba Modern dance team along with his college friends Mike Song and Anthony Lee and participated in MTV'S AMERICA'S BEST DANCE CREW in 2008 and ended in the third position of the reality show. 

    At first, he had dancing added to his resume as an added skill set but ironically, whenever he auditioned for roles, people would request him to show his moves which forced him to remove his dancing from his resume. However, Kao is still involved in dancing and is now associated with the Kinjaz dance team.

    Kao finally started acting after completing B.A. in Theater from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). 

    He is associated with East West Players, South Coast Repertory and San Diego Repertory and despite having a flawless TV acting career, he considers stage acting as the best way to express and connect to the viewers.

    Lawrence Kao was lucky from his very first TV appearence because he debuted in the AMC post-apocalyptic horror series The Walking Dead in 2012. 

    Following his first performance, Kao won other roles on a variety of TV shows and films, including Hawaii Five-0, Sleepy Hollow, Girlboss, Lucky Fifty, Silver Lake, NCIS: Los Angeles and The Purge. 

    Kao then signed up as a regular cast in Tommy Wah's All-Asian action series Wu Assassins.
